|Post subject:||CA Kid repaired & ready for action! (Plus fix tip)|
On our first sale date I crashed the CA Kid into a stone wall and acquired a gash/hole in the bow area!
John had asked me in an e-mail if I had repaired it and I sent him a reply,
he thought it might be a good idea to post the steps of the fix on the forum, so here it goes!
I have repaired the CA Kid, but I didn't think to take photos as I did the repair,
I think I was disgusted and just wanted to get the fix over with!
Took a couple of pics of the final repair...it isn't beautiful, but I think it will be quite serviceable!
Since the gash/hole was in the bow & not really accessible from the inside,
I gave some thought to how to go about the repair and this is what I came up with.
Taking an old trick for fixing a drywall hole from a home improvement show,
I cut a small piece of thin plywood a little larger than the hole, drilled a hole in its center,
so I could put a wire with a hook on the end through it.
Then I slid the plywood piece into the hole & pulled it up tight to the back side of the opening.
While holding it there, tack glued it with CA so it stayed in place as a backer.
Then I mixed up a batch of thickened Epoxy to fill the gash with.
After it hardened I sanded it fairly smooth and then did some
creative painting to approximate the wood color and grain.
It's not perfect, but the saving grace is the fix is at such an angle on the bow,
that really isn't that obvious unless you know about it or look for it!
